Quick Thoughts by Yes Coach [September 3, 2011]

Game ONE: We have been BORN… and by all indications we are a happy healthy baby with all its fingers and toes.. And though the loss was bitter in some respects, the need to see and learn was the focus.

We have North Carroll this week. They beat Westminster… scored 26 last week, and gave up 0… this is our game to loose, as I am counting it as a win.

OK.. For anyone looking in on this get ready to get out of your box, and enter the POSSM Offense. Also, we will be talking defense and the creation of the 9-1-1.

Phase 1 we will be breaking down Starting Formations, Offensive Fronts, Receiver Sets, Blocking, Back Field Positioning, and Shifts and Motion.

Starting Groups: Starting Groups include: Center, Blocking Back on the line, with groups or clusters that shift into fronts. The groups or clusters will be set between the TE and Slot positions at a 2 yard depth and shift when prompted by the QB. Basic Groupings:

Double Arrow
Arc
Roll
Hurry

Offensive Fronts:
This offense is run from offensive line ‘Fronts’. We will start with 3-3, 3-2 as our teaching points. The fronts will set strong or weak, and will be a standard call on the outset.

So… The beginning of the play call will be either: Strong 3-3 (left side strong) or 3-3 Strong (right side strong). This will remain consistent throughout.

Players will play positions, Guard, Tackle, etc… and will learn both Left and Right sides.

Receiver Sets: We will only use ‘X’ and ‘Z’ in Phase 1.
Basic Sets:

Slot (L) WR (R) = X and the reverse is Z
Slot (L) WR (L) = XZ Left the reverse is XZ Right

From this there will be either Twins or Duce and they will be from the Slot, WR or TE field position.

Twins from the WR position = Twins out, from the Slot = over, and from the TE = in.

SO… Lets start to develop a play call: Roll/Strong 3-3/X… Ok, got it.

Blocking Call: We will be Using a Zone Blocking Stratagem. Phase 1 will include: Straight Zone(50), Inside(60), Outside(70). Straight

Play call: Roll/Strong 3-3/X/60

Back Field Positioning: There are 4 components here. Offensive Mapping, Point of Attack, and how many blockers we will be brought to the point of attack and where those blockers will come from. Because Offensive Mapping is a new concept, implementation will come as understood… therefore, as a means to use previous knowledge of our system the use of formation colors will be used as a reference point. White = I (1 lead blocker), Blue = Power (2 lead blockers), Red = Spread with single Set Back and Gold = Empty Back Field. The 5 basic runs: Dive = Dive, 1 blocker Leading = Lead, 2 blockers Leading = Power, Toss = Toss and Sweep = Sweep. These runs will be executed: Inside, Mid, Out not by Holes. My reasoing for this… I want heads up and eyes that are active. The indicator of what side of the Center to run is: Inside Dive 20 = Left, 20 Inside Dive = Right, just as with the blocking strength. Back numbering: FB 2, SB 3, BB 4.

This offense is designed to bring lead blocking from pulls and motion, and with the use of colors combination’s any of the 5 basic runs can be achieved. Just as with a 22 dive, we would call 20 inside. If we wanted a inside lead, then it would be 20 inside lead that would then include where the lead block was coming from. If it is coming from the BB, and the BB is at the WB position, motion would be called to achieve this block.

Play call: Roll/Strong 3-3/X/60/inside dive 20

more to come…..
